Why does my cable connection suck ass?

It is 3Mbps cable that I'm getting through a local company with a brand new Motorola Surfboard modem.

My download speeds are rarely over 130K.

I have to constantly "reboot" the modem because service is always up and down.

Pages load half as fast as my old 1.5Mbps DSL.

I'm seriously getting pissed off here!!!

Could it be the modem? Could it be configuration settings? What the fuck is going on with this shit? Any ideas?

Ahh all right. Each time I call them, they feed me a bunch of non-sense and always wind up telling me that rebooting the modem will fix it. A-holes.

My old provider was awesome (Qwest). But their lines don't run in this part of town. The provider, with whom my lines are owned now, only offers 256 and 648 at the same price I'm getting cable. So I'm pretty much up shit creek in this department.

I guess I can stave it until Monday. Then I'm gonna call these guys and try and cut through some of this bullshit. I'll specifically bring up the subject of clocking my speed, since I'm now more enlightened when it comes to this. If they keep giving me shit I'll call them every time my connection goes down just to pester them. It's like they say, "the squeaky wheel gets the oil".

is your cable line going directly from the junction box into your modem? there should be seperate line completely that runs from outside right into your modem...if they didn't do that, they fucked up

I think so because the guy had to climb up the telephone pole and do some shit.

The line runs from the wall to the modem, but I couldn't positively tell you.

Any suggestions that I could possibly do with it? Or is it all up to the cable company at this point?

Ugh! Right now I have something downloading at 32k.

                  My cable is crappy

I had this problem a while back, it was because they installed a filter on the line when I canceled my cable TV

So a filter is on there from the previous tenant's cancellation?

I do have cable TV also.

call the company, they will know if a filter/trap has been installed or was on there from the previous tennants.

nickhimself - check your frequencies by accessing the diagnostics page of the modem.

                                  What state are you in?

                                  Then:

3mbps? jeezus that sucks... we normally run between 9 and 11mbps on our laptops with a wireless router

maybe you're in a hig-traffic area with the shared pipe? *shrug*

Dont know what youre talking about:: 98% of residential cable users have 1.5-3Mbps download.

It doesnt matter if its a 'shared' pipe, everyone is capped at the headend.

its your node and frequency, call your cable company they need to come out and fix it.

nothing that can be done over the phone, requires onsite work.

Just tell them they need to be adjusted?

you cant adjust it, you have signal degredation, they need to come out and check your wires and shit.

just keep the address of your diagnostics page handy, save that traceroute, and tell them it when you're on the phone.

that traceroute alone is enough... dont bs around to much with Level1 support, try to get pushed to Level3, so they can provision a date for you... itll be about 2 weeks possibly before someone gets out there to do anything... (usually)

                                                    Who is the ISP?

My download speeds are rarely over 130K.

I have to constantly "reboot" the modem because service is always up and down.

Pages load half as fast as my old 1.5Mbps DSL.

I'm seriously getting pissed off here!!!

Could it be the modem? Could it be configuration settings? What the fuck is going on with this shit? Any ideas?
they have glass (fiber optics) in your neighborhood? If so, very good chance it could be the modem . . . I had problems with mine a while back, swap out the modem and all was well
