Why webmasters need and like Gmail ?

I'm just curious why everybody need that Gmail invites, etc, isn't it better to pay a few bucks a month and have tons of features + your own domain, etc.

Explain it to me, please. I can't understand that.

Space worth nothing. A lot of hosting companies have untlimited space in their plans.

And one more question. Have you ever needed that 1Gb in your mail ? Outlook is much more convenient than any webmail, imo.

I like to sign up at 100 boards a day and shit and like to give a free email addy so my email wont get spamed

ok, that's the only reason I see. create some email to not get spammed, but then, why Gmail ? people begging for it ! well, you can create Yahoo (it's 100mb now). but why Gmail ?

I'm with you, it blows my mind. I have one pop addy for boards and other bullshit, and one for business. If I needed a gig it wouldn't be a problem, and I'm not giving anyone the right to read my e-mails.

I don't even want to correspond with anyone using a gmail account.

well, what if you can pay $4.95 for your domain/year and pay like $2.95 monthly to have pop3/smtp access ? and you could have some good domain like your surname and create a few emails for your relatives. isn't it better ?

i have tons ot email addresses, i also work on different computer, move mail from one to another is not very convinient and i dont want to deal with ms exchange.
i'm switching to Gmail, i love how it works and looks, sending and getting email made easy and pleasant. the feel it gives me - almost like bbs chat if not better.
i was dreaming for email interface like they have for a long time.
and targeted advertising works better than any ads/banners i've seen, its not annoing its related to the topic i'm interested in w/o pushing over the border, doesn't irritate at all. basically gives a bunch of additional reference at your fingertips at no cost to you.

and if you don't like reading your email in 'conversation' type of mode you can switch to regular. but i prefer conversation mode.

it doesn't have folders but it has labels - same thing.
more i use gmail, less and less i want to fire up outlook.

being aware of the fact that your email being indexed and corelated to my searches makes me more thoughtful and careful, does not offend or takes away my privacy.
in case i need to protect my privacy i still have secure layer in my pop/smpt ;)

Okay I see the difference between pop3 and gmail, but why not use IMAP in stead?

have you seen IMAP web interface close to gmail? i'd pay for it, but i have no time to write my own.

also gmail got awesome spell checker, and email suggestion form your address book when you start typing it in the 'to' field.

the only 2 drawbacks i can think of now about gmail
- is sending email in different language makes it unreadable, i can't figure out why, altough i have no such problems with yahoo or my other imap accounts.
- will be much convinient when google integrates gmail with google toolbar. i don't think its happening anytime soon as long gmail in beta, or when they upgrade their toolbar and have new version of it in beta too.

And a bit more about Gmail. For me it looks unprofessional when webmaster using some free email addy. Yeah, it's ok when you transferring files between your computers, but not for talking to people. Webmail is for reagular users, not for advanced users, imo. You know how to buy a domain, set the nameservers, maybe configure your mail server, set the outlook - do it! Any custom domain will looks much more good than any free one. It looks to me the same like some design studio would use design from templatemonster for own site.
