backing up data on server

what is the best method for backing up data on a server? i am speicifically talking about databases. is there a php script solution that can do this automatically daily?

I've written a CLI php script for a couple of sites which dumps their MySQL databases gzip 'em up and (dependent uipon the size) email them to the webmaster as a backup... this was done using cron every night

I backup all my data to a second harddrive on the server every night.

Odds of both harddrives going kaput at the same time is pretty astronomical.
