Fairly simple solution to the search function problem

Password protect the damn thing and issue a password only on request via email or something only to members you wish to allow access to it, and screw the kiddies.

Sort of like one of those so called "elite business only" forums, except no need for a new forum, just access to the search.

hell, no need even for issuing password, just create a new user group, and on request (and approval), move that user to the new group (which has access to the search.

and how do you do that? How do you stop someone from logging in?

A new user group is the easiest method. People are banned on an individual basis here, so why can't people be moved to a new group on an individual basis? That entire group would have access to the search. If someone isn't interested enough in it to send a simple request, then obviously they aren't needing the search too bad.

And lens has a pretty good handle on who's who, so it shouldn't be a big deal. Plus, if someone is allowed into the group and starts blasting the search, then simply ban the fucker. He can reregister a new nick, but he'll be back in the lowest group with no access.

I think that's a reasonable solution.

if you're absolutely certain that it can't be defeated & bypassed, then yes, that's a good idea. But I'm not convinced that it's unbeatable.

Anyone using OCR/ICR in their scripts can bypass it. However I'd take a wild guess 99% of people here don't have a clu ehwat those acronyms even mean, let alone use them

(It's optical character recognition and intelligent character recognition, respectively).
