Content pricing

Just had a very interesting conversation with a webmaster about the price of content.

He wants a quality teeny site, with real teens and exclusive sets. He is already buying some sets but admitted they were poor, but cheap.

What he wants is quality for the same price. He wants to make more money without spending more.

One of the things about having quality is it's rarity if everyone had a Lotus car it would not be prestigeous.

Expect to pay for quality and understand it's true benefits. It says something about you to the surfer. Putting up the same old crap as eveyone else, will not put you apart. Something that is needed when there are 100,000 in the herd.

No he can keep using them, they can stay in business. It puts our clients above their clients. Audi and Saab want Fords to stay in business.

wouldn't it jsut be cheaper to get a password from your site and just copy all the pics?

All the proper size ones have my url on them, do it and I can open my own paysite and not pay for traffic. They will see where all the good stuff came from and head there in a click

Whenever anyone points out a way someone might steal some of my own photography, I point out that I don't sell photos, anyway. What I sell is the right to use them. If I find someone using them without the right to use them, I can fuck them over in several different ways.

Content is a marketplace like any other. If something is sold at a "too good to be true" price, there is probably a reason why. A lot of newbies will buy what seems like a bargain CD, "!000 pics only $60!" or some such. What they don't realize is that the reason the pics are so cheap is probably one or more of several reasons: 1) they are old tired content; 2) they are unauthorized pirated content; 3) they are photos used in magazines years ago; 4) they are the photos rejected by the magazines; 5) the way the seller plans on making money off the content is by selling it by the dumptruck load.

Anybody who makes good content and sells it in reasonable quantities while it's still fresh is either a piss-poor businessperson or he's insane.

I've taken the position from the beginning that I won't let myself become "the K-Mart of adult content."

Let's face it: If you could buy a Lexus for $13.5K, everyone would have one and it would no longer be anything special.

The key to success, especially for a pay site, is to have exclusive content, regularly refreshed. If you get five joins a day and every other day one of them decides to leave rebilling on because they at last have a neverending source of the kind of content they like, this is how one becomes wealthy in this business.

Having the sort of stuff they can find anywhere without hardly trying is not the way to go.

Either deal with a quality, but small-volume supplier (like myself), or get exclusive material made (which I also do). Otherwise, you're just another "me-too" webmaster without much prospect of getting anywhere.
