I don't have msn anymore, but there is an option to stop this, just click all options to see which one you need. (very helpfull, I know ) It took me some time to figure it out, but it is possible

                        start>run>msconfig>click startup tab>uncheck msnmsgr
wont run at startup and will connect only when you want it to

MSN messenger starts up when I load Outlook Express. If you use outlook Express you will have to open it up, go into "Tools", then "options"..... and under the "general tab" you'll see a checkbox that says "automatically log on to messenger"... UNcheck it.

                            Another thing..... try this:

                            close all programs.
Go to START >> RUN then type in "msconfig" and hit OK.
Go to the "Startup" tab and look at all the shit that you have loading on startup.
Find anything that looks like MSN messenger and UNcheck it.
In fact, you can uncheck EVERYTHING IN THAT LIST. You don't need shit auto-starting, if you need a program opened you can do it manually at your leisure.
                            Click "APPLY" and then "OKAY"
                            yes to RESTART
after your system is done booting you will see a little alert box on your desktop that says "selective startup"..... make sure to check the box that says "Do not remind me again" or whatever, and you're good to go.

Your machine will boot a lot quicker and you'll have more available resources without having a bunch of shit loaded that you're not using eating up your RAM.

Add these to the reg with DWORD value 1

                                  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Mes senger\Client\PreventRun

                                  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Mes senger\Client\PreventAutoRun

                                  Run these from dos shell.

                                  rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %systemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

                                  rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection BLC.Remove 128 %systemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf

                                  Then run this.

                                  notepad.exe %systemRoot%\INF\sysoc.inf

                                  Remove "hide" from this.
                                  msmsgs=hide

                                  Reboot.

                                  Add/Remove programs to uninstall it.

Now you're 100% clean of it.

                                      Ever think about using Google?

I had the same problem before and found the solution on Google.

here's another way that worked for me:

start>run> (then type the following in the run dialog)

                                        RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

                                        hope that helps

UNcheck it.

                                              Another thing..... try this:

                                              close all programs.
Go to START >> RUN then type in "msconfig" and hit OK.
Go to the "Startup" tab and look at all the shit that you have loading on startup.
Find anything that looks like MSN messenger and UNcheck it.
In fact, you can uncheck EVERYTHING IN THAT LIST. You don't need shit auto-starting, if you need a program opened you can do it manually at your leisure.
                                              Click "APPLY" and then "OKAY"
                                              yes to RESTART
after your system is done booting you will see a little alert box on your desktop that says "selective startup"..... make sure to check the box that says "Do not remind me again" or whatever, and you're good to go.

Your machine will boot a lot quicker and you'll have more available resources without having a bunch of shit loaded that you're not using eating up your RAM.
i tried that and it still doesnt seem to correct the problem

That is exactly how you remove ALL parts of MSN.

I am the only one so far to post the full details.

You think I'm trying to hack ppl????

I'm simply answering his question and telling him how to
completely remove MSN. Having MSN is a bigger backdoor into
your system then just about anything else.

If you know how long I've been in this industry....
and think I'm trying to hack my fellow webmasters....

                                                You're a fuckin fool.

Add these to the reg with DWORD value 1

                                                  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Mes
                                                  senger\Client\PreventRun

                                                  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Mes
                                                  senger\Client\PreventAutoRun

                                                  Run these from dos shell.

                                                  rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %systemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

                                                  rundll32 setupapi,InstallHinfSection BLC.Remove 128 %systemRoot%\INF\msmsgs.inf

                                                  Then run this.

                                                  notepad.exe %systemRoot%\INF\sysoc.inf

                                                  Remove "hide" from this.
                                                  msmsgs=hide

                                                  Reboot.

                                                  Add/Remove programs to uninstall it.

Now you're 100% clean of it.

Crypto boy was right. Just use msconfig from the run menu. Its in the startup tab.

That will not work for most people.

MS circumvent their own usual methods of auto-running and have
hacked up a way to get MSN to run all the time. The only way to
completely remove it and never have it run again is the steps
                                                      above.

Well, yes and no. It prevents the msn messenger from starting up, but you still get the little icon on your startup menu beside your clock in the lower right of your screen. But the program isn't "on", just the icon is there. If you go "ctrl-alt-del" you'll see that the program is not running.

So in this sense, it doesn't bother me to have the little icon there. So I deal, and live with it, and work around it, and I don't take anti-depressants for it. I'm a good boy.
