if you have a portable HD ( external enclosure type )what i would do is copy the shit there and then recopy to the new laptop.
This way you dont even to network both pc's and simple as hell to do
I have been moving Massive Data lately this way and its Ultra fast...USB 2.0 also helps qute a bit.
I do like GB per minute almost speed wise, practical as hell for me..
This reminds me i need more Hard drives
I would have to agree with doober. Using an external HDD is much easier than setting up your units for networking. It is very handy as a backup unit too.

that happened to my old computer. i just hooked up the old drive as a slave temporarly and copied the whole drive onto a folder on the drive in my new computer
Its not a problem to transfer data between 2 laptops at all ,
If you have a LAN card in your laptops you can connect them with an Ethernet twisted cable.
If you have win 98+ on the laptops just go to my computer , properties and select the "computer name tab" there input the name of the work group (must be same at both laptops ) then restart the laptops. share the hahahahahahahahas you want to transfer and open them by clicking on run and typing "//computername" the computer with it shared stuff will open and you will be able to transfer the data.
If you have a router/hub then just plug the two into it and send the files through MSN or ICQ or some other peer-to-peer client. It's uber-fast, as it should be. Message me on ICQ if that isn't working for ya.

Cheers,
Matt
It will be the same if he connect the laptops directly he does not need a hub to make the connection. I think msn or ICQ are not relevant because he will need to connect to the internet and have the files to pass throw his internet provider to reach the other end.
Anyways to transfer your files using programs that in their base uses the tcp/ip protocol will require from you to configure an ip per laptop some thing like 10.0.0.1 for laptop 1 and 10.0.0.2 for laptop 2.
Only one person in this thread knew enough to be able to bring up a peer to peer connection?!
