    mysql question

Anybody here has some knowledge of tuning a mysql server?
When the server gets a bit busy it seems that most of the sessions get locked. Machine has double PIII 800 512 meg of ram
Hits when it gets locked around an 200 hits a minute

What do you mean by locked? What is the effect of this "lock" -- I have some experience with mysql. (I serve about 2.5 million mysql generated pages per day -- off one box)
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

maybe you set the limit for number of connections too low? also dont use persistent connections, they do nothing but waste mysql resources..

The persistant thing wastes resources if you're running php as a CGI, but if you're running it as a module, it can do some good. Seems the problem here is slow table updates/no indexes.

Use PostgresQL, that goes slow on many request, but doesn't die like MySQL does. MySQL is unsuitable for things like counters and such, especially when you start doing bigger numbers
