I THINK that 20 slices is usually to many and will slow down the load. Fairly sure your browser loads four slices at a time.
So then I'd reduce the number of slices first. I've done this to many sponsor half and full page adds to speed things along.
Next jpg or gif - depends on the image. You can get size down quick in gif if you reduce the number of colors. But the picture may look like shit then - depends.
You know about jpg quality, I'm sure - just keep reducing till you loose the look.
