look, it's pretty fuckin' simple.
this is what you should have:
A file server/hard disk array, with all your data.
Any desktop(s) and/or laptop systems you want.
A LAN.
Keep nothing on your systems except the operating systems.
No need for sync'ing anything. Everything is accessed from the array. Any incidental files you have like, cutom wallpapers or themes or whatever, should be minimal, and will take you all of 1.3 seconds to drag across the LAN.
