i have written a something recently for one of my other websites, so i'll just paste the whole thing here, i hope it helps you all out some.

it still needs a bit of work, but should be useful
                good luck
                -------------------------------------------------------------

i have had a TON of complaints lately about trojans, worms, viruses, ect

so here are some links, and info

                antivirus software:
                Norton 15 day free trial:
                http://nct.symantecstore.com/fulfill/0001.105

                Norton online scanner:
                http://security.norton.com/default.a...d=us&venid=sym

                McAfee virusscan evaluation:
                http://www.nai.com/us/downloads/evals/

                Ad Aware spyware scanner:
                http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

                The Cleaner trojan scanner
                http://www.moosoft.com/

Tucows antivirus/anti-trojan downloads(some are free full versions):
                http://www.tucows.com/virus95_default.html

                Download.com antivirus/anti-trojan downloads(some are free full versions):
                http://download.com.com/3150-2239-0.html?tag=dir

if you have a high speed or static ip connection(static= your ip doesn't change, or rarely changes), you should ALSO have a firewall installed and running at ALL times.

                i recommend Zonealarm:
                www.zonelabs.com
another well recieved firewall is Tiny Firewall:
                http://www.tinysoftware.com/home/tiny2?la=EN
Tiny Firewall is a great alternative for people with older, slower machines.

                ---------------------------------------------
                now some information:
first of all, antivirus software is NOT a trojan scanner, OR spyware scanner.
they are 3 TOTALLY different things, although the new norton is getting pretty heavy into the trojan stuff.

                how do you get infected:
viruses and trojans come mostly from files you have opened/ran, NEVER blindly open a file sent to you by others, especially if they came through email, or irc.

many viruses "hide" by coming from a friend who didn't even know it was sent, or even come from someone in another infected person's contact list.
protect other people by keeping you contact list to a minimum, outlook express, for example, auto-adds a person to your contact list, just because you have sent or recieved an email, DISABLE THAT OPTION, if you want/need someone in your contact list it's really easy to add them anyway.
....also.... those who have my or any of the admins emails in their contact list, please REMOVE us, we don't want you spam crap anyway, and it's about impossible to forget our email addresses.

many website can give you viruses also, so EVERYONE should ALWAYS have their antivirus running as a service (always enabled and running)

                spyware:
this usually comes from the net (websites)
it can also be part of the payload of a virus
if you frequent pornsites, or even many free webhosts, then chances are you have come across these console installers, the most common are G.A.I.N. (Gator):

Gator is a software product that can automatically fill in passwords and other form-elements on Web pages. But its main purpose is to load an advertising spyware module called OfferCompanion, which displays pop-up ads when visiting some Web sites.
it spies on what sites the user is visiting.(hence the name "spyware")
also commonly refered to as "drive-by-downloads"

another very common one is the XXXtoolbar:
this one is even worse, it can change your homepage, as well as all the other bad things

the simplest thing when you do get a console popup installer it to just close it, DO NOT click "yes" or "no" CLICK THE X in the top corner, just because it says "no" doesn't mean it wont do anything to you, remember who we are dealing with people!

all in all, use safe websurfing, and general internet security practices, and you should never have problems.

                last notes:

DON'T waste time with popup blockers, you are getting the popups most likely due to having spyware installed, FIXING the problem is the only real solution.

                ALWAYS run antivirus software.
do your windows updates and virus definitions updates WEEKLY.

also make sure your browser security is set to "Default" and privacy setting is "medium"
and DO NOT think you are smarter than these things, or i guarantee you wil be the first one to get infected.

if you DO find bad stuff on your system, and can't remove it with one of the above tools, try searching for it on www.google.com for the name of the virus/trojan/worm, whatever and you should be able to find instructions to fix your system

                GET PIMPED, and GET FIXED!

SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.
