    Servermatrix or virtual host?

Anyone using servermatrix? Are you having trouble with them?
I'll be getting mostly free site traffic and a couple of small paysites with about 1000 visitors/day each and was wondering wether I should go with servermatrix's cheapest dedicated solution or take a virtual host.

Only go with servermatrix if you know how to manage a server yourself. Support tickets can sometimes take up to 3 days for a response at servermatrix.

If you aren't going to transfer anywhere near 1000 gb's a month, you would be better off going with a Semi-Dedicated on isprime.

You probably won't use up 1000GB with just that amount of visitors.

We can offer you a semi-dedicated on a much faster server for less than that at TheXXXHost.com. Using the coupon BoardsPromo20 when ordering will give it to you for even 20% less ;)

I'm sure you can find someone on this board willing to help you out with any server tasks though.

I thought I'd be alright if I took the Cpanel/WHM option. I know how to use Linux but don't know much about the BIND/DNS and the security stuff.

Because I got free hosting in exchange for my sig. It's just for february and I'm wondering wether I should go with a dedicated solution instead. And I need to be able to host at least 10 domain names.

75 bucks an hour, 2 hour estimate to be able to FTP.

i wans going to use them for gallery shit, and it costs 150 for them to allow me to FTP?

whatever, for that I can get an additional box with webair.

As mentioned, go semi for now but be prepared to upgrade to a full dedicated if necessary. Don't trust your paysites on a virtual account. And don't go with an unmanaged server unless you know a fair amount about managing servers, that could be a complete disaster. I tried it about 4 years ago, one of the biggest mistakes I've ever made.

If you would like to know more about why a semi would best suit your situation, feel free to hit me on ICQ at 147479144 or send me an email at [email protected] and I'd be happy to chat with you.

                            ?!

$150 to enable FTP? It takes 2 seconds, I would have done it for free.

I thought those servers were fully managed. so you got a server and the ftp wasnt even setup and then they charged you 75 bucks an hour!

it was like 59 bucks for the server with 1000 gigs, and it wasnt even set up to FTP.

after finally getting through to the contact, they estimated it would take 2 hours for support to set up the FTP and it was 75 bucks an hour.

so it 150 + 59 to be able to FTP.

i cancelled it, still paid the 59 and never used it.

I have a box at servermatrix, not had it for long, so I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending them. No problems so far tho.

One thing I will say. You'd be better off visiting webhostingtalk than asking on GFY for hosting advice, most of the posts I seen regarding hosting on here just emphasize posters here are adult webmasters and not hosting experts. Most know jack-shit about hosting.

why do you need ftp?? wont SSH client do?? Servermatrix is cheap...take that however you want...I burned 998GB last month for $59 but had to get someone else to fix it for me ounce...$75/hour for their support is a huge ripoff but if you know how to manage or someone you know does it can be worthwhile

I expect AT LEAST be able to ftp into it.

are yuou telling me, i can get $20 hosting thats set up for ftp, but if I buy a $60 server, it should come stripped and will cost me an additional $150 to be able to ftp?

                                          thats insanely stupid.

I said a couple of paysites with about 1000 visitors/day each and the rest will be used for galleries, free sites, etc.

So far the only virtual host that proved stable enough for a paysite and I've stayed with for over two years is he.net but they're quite pricy.

webair, isprime, jupiterhost and OXEO (sig) are probably your best options. I would recommend you to get a shared account with one of them

are yuou telling me, i can get $20 hosting thats set up for ftp, but if I buy a $60 server, it should come stripped and will cost me an additional $150 to be able to ftp?

                                                thats insanely stupid.
Well, you must have been dealing with an idiot there. Our servers were ready in 24 hours, everything was fine and ftp was working fine

We also paid the extra $20 a month for cpanel though. It's worth the extra $$$, everything is pretty straight forward and easy to set up. Maybe without a complete control panel it's more difficult to set services up...

You could have solved this problem quickly and cheaply by ordering Cpanel with the server for $20 bucks. Especially considering you obviously did not know how to setup ftp yourself . . .

after finally getting through to the contact, they estimated it would take 2 hours for support to set up the FTP and it was 75 bucks an hour.

so it 150 + 59 to be able to FTP.

i cancelled it, still paid the 59 and never used it.

Exactly, the base price is a stripped down product that a sysadmin who doesn't want to pay for shit he doesn't need would use...

just pay someone here to set up the linux box and use it, its a very cheap deal. after that you can use if for future projects too, because there is plenty of monthly transfer quota
