Affiliate programs

How important (or not) is it to have an affiliate program on it's own domain?

Is it too much of a pain to have to go to the main site and click on the webmaster link instead of going to an affiliate web site?

I would think that having just one site to promote, or maybe 2 or 3 that are focused on the same person then it is ok to have the program on one of those names.... But if you are promotion different sites, then it looks much more professional
