Router problem, need some help please

Alright, I have two computers here, One in my bedroom, one in the living room, The cable modem is in my bedroom with the router. The CPU in here is running xp and the living room cpu is running 2000 pro.

I have everything hooked up, the living room cpu seems to have no problems connecting, my bedroom one however will connect only at periods at a time, it will connect to icq/msn, but then I can't browse the web, or I can't do anything at all. I tried resetting everything, I had some suggestions on another board that should have worked but didn't. I was curious if I have to setup something on my bedroom cpu. All cords are brand new, I switched them, as well as put them in different ports, I installed and ran the install guide for the router...

My isp told me to turn everything off and then back on, which is their dumbass suggestion for everything, which didn't help. I also read that it could be a virus, so I ran a certain program by Mcafee meant for this purpose, and it was clean, as well I have Norton running all day.

If you had this problem, or know of a solution, that would be great, I've been pissed at this for two days now, I just want it up and running steady, I'm tired of disconnecting in the middle of conversations with clients or people I'm trying to get work to.

P.S. I'm not very hardware savvy, setting up a router seemed simple enough, but I guess not.

I just thought of this, I'm running ZoneAlarm as a cpu firewall program, would that effect this in anyway?

A couple of things to check..

Make sure your dhcp pool is large enough..

Make sure you didnt by chance statically assign 1 pc taking the only available public IP

Another thing you might want to try is to statically assign your router, and also possibly increase the lease length on the client machines

thank you Mojo Rizin, even though I don't understand a damn thing you said, I'll check it all out.

I renewed the ip's on both cpu's, so I don't believe I assigned the one IP

Here is what I would do:

Bring the D-Link back, then buy a Wireless netgear router (I got mine for 50$). Then you will only need to buy one wireless ethernet adapater for 50$, and you can plug the computer next to your router into the router directly with one of the cables you have. Its definitly worth it to go wireless, I had a linksys router and had wires running all over the house until my entire house got flooded while I was on vacation. So now I switched over to netgear wireless router and I have had 0 problems with it. It took 10 mins to setup to.

Asign the outgoing IP (supplied by ISP, if you got Dynamic IP just corss the check box for dynamic IP and fill in the info requiered) to the router (via 192.168.0.1 in your browser...asume you've already done this) put BOTH comps on auto asign in networksettings -> TCP/IP then EVERYTHING should work....

Plus you may get free internet.. when I am sitting on the couch downstairs, I can surf using my neighbors internet connection.
