question about hookin up Cable internet

Before you tell me it sucks I know it does but it still beats dial-up.

Here's the deal, I'm going to stay at a friends house for a bit so I need to move my office (temp) he has cable internet going to the house with another comp with cable modem already using it, I want to branch off of that connection to my comp. Problem: I have an ADSL modem and I do not want to set up a network.

I know I will need a HUB or someshit but what the fuck do I do with it?

What are you talking about when you say you don't want to set up a network? If you want to piggyback on his connection, you have to set up a network. Your computer will have to go through his computer to reach the internet. Otherwise, you'll have to get another cable modem and pay a monthly fee to his service provider to allow more than one connection at a time.

you need a router if you both want on at the same time.

Go from his cable modem to the router.
then connect each pc from the router

Get like a small linksys or dlink router that plugs in to the cable modem, then hook up both computers to it.

if you're not going to be there for too long, just order a separate connection.. i think cox only charges an additional $7/mo for each extra cable modem connection in the house

If you mean you don't want the lines around house, try wireless. For under $200, I think you can get pretty good connection, both router and adapter. Linksey (maybe wrong spelling) is the best.

I got a linksys wireless router and nic card for my laptop, it sucks for me. I can't get it to work in my living room, which is literally just on the other side of the wall from the office. Tried moving my router to all areas of the office and can't get the signal to stay strong. Gonna try and switch to a dlink router myself and see if it's any better.

Really? I personally prefer Linksy than Dlink, just a gut feeling, never tried Dlink. Anyway, good luck.

You can get a linksys router (non wireless) for like 40-50 bucks I think. Linksys BEFSR41 is what you will need.

you can pay a lot or a little. . . . personally I don't see the point in paying a lot . . . just get a 4 port router . . . I don't care much for those with wireless capability as I make more money with those hardwired . . . . ethernet is faster than wireless too

Clueless, right. Read your own post, genius. When you have multiple computers connected through a single gateway to the internet, you have a network. Oh, excuse me, a virtual private network. Without computer "A" and its cable modem you have shit. When one computer relies on another for operation, you once again have a network. It doesn't matter if they are sharing files or just data streams. I suppose all the computers have to be connected to one central piece of hardware for kicks.

Edit: OK, I retract this statement:
"Your computer will have to go through his computer to reach the internet."

Make that: "Your computer will be forced to rely on the operation of his hardware for internet access."

The poor choice of wording is my fault, the basic concept is still correct.
