Lets say i register a .com of the name a college basketball player and then he goes on to get drafted and play in the NBA. If he becomes famous and decides to copyright his name, can the .com be taken away from me even though I registered it well before?

You can't copyright a name. But you can trademark a name if you got the money to do so. However... it's virtually pointless in that scenario, because if it's the guys actual name, you most likely won't stand a chance in court over it even if you do get a trademark for it. Actually it wouldnt even end up in court.
The process would be taken to "WIPO" World Intellectual Property Organization" which is basically a panel of judges that decide who should have the rights to certain names. Your defense would be meager because unless unless you can show some type of reason whyu to have that name, and its actively up and running is the hard part.
Your name isnt the same name as the domain in question, Your childs name or someone that would connected to you some how doesnt have the same name so the WIPO panel would almost defienitely ide with the plantiff and award him the name on grounds that ou dont have any use, or right to the name.
Your best option is to sell the name for just uunder 1500.00 being thats the cost to file a WIPO claim.
