Apache - stop dir browsing

Wanting to edit the .conf in apache server to stop directory browsing. I used to uswe the comanche GUI to do this but it has gone haywire. Much appreciation in advance!

I decided to use the .htaccess (of which i hadnt before)
i had to turn allowoerride 'all' in the .conf
