i don't understand. so it was supposed to cost 25 bucks between three people. but she came back and gave them each 1 pound. so for the THREE PEOPLE: 1+1+1 = 3????? 25+3=28!!!! 28 + her tip = 30!! where the heck did 3 x 9 = 27 come in.

Regardless, this equation balances: $10*3 = $30 minus $5 dollars BEFORE the tender so, 30 - 5 = $25. It is only HERE, at or AFTER the original tender that the manager swipes $2 for himself and gives each back 1 of the $3 dollars remaining, so in mathematical reality its: 30 - 3 = 27 which when subtracted from the ACTUAL amount tendered $25 gives us 27 - 25 = 2.

This recurring number makes up the other pound that appears to be missing.

I got it. I think your explaination is misleading.

The way that question asked is misleading, it's like adding apples and orange. We should not add 27 and 2. We should add either 27+1+1+1 or 25+1+1+1+2. They all come to 30. In logic, it's called--I don't know the english word.
