on a join page of a site, you sometimes see an offer below it for a membership in another site. it will have a checkbox next to it - sometimes checked, sometimes not. if your joining member joins your special offer site when he joins your site, you've just made a cross sale.

Im guessing when you sell a membership to a site and within that members area they do an upsell witch would give you a cross sale .... im guessing not 100% sure
