    Wireless Router / Lan Help

Does anyone know if the 54mbps gives you any better distance or better connection?

I'd like to move my office to a different room but didn't want to run wires. I dont want it dropping connection or it means it's a bitch to upload content or play online games.

    Thanks

Yeah I don't think there is any appreciable difference in range or connection quality.

Of course you get the higher local transfer rate if you are moving stuff between machines in your house, but you will always have that 1.5m bottleneck when you go out to the rest of the world.

Given that restriction I just went with 802 11b

I had 802.11b and switched to 802.11g a few months ago! The speed and range difference is amazing!

I recommend using netgeaR FOR 802.11G. it simply cannot be beat!

Are you able to upload/download content (movies/pics) without it losing connection?

get a linksys router as they do a 'add-on' booster
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.

                      NO!!!!
This is what I had before! doesn't boost the connection much.

Besides, for the price of the router and booster, you could buy the 802.11g along with the lan card.

be sure to watch your security tho'.

I found 3 other people on my network. ...and when I tried all the security stuff on this page:
                        http://support.gateway.com/s/NETWORK...4511faq5.shtml

....it fucked up my connection for things like ICQ. I was only getting about 1/2 of my ICQ's. I eventually trashed the wireless & went back to a hard line.

Yea. We run wireless 2 stories down and 2 room walls across.

I could hook up my neighbors if I wanted to I suspect.

Damn! I didn't think you would get any more range out of the G wireless rig...

                                Oh well.

I have 4 stories with a linksys 802.11b router in the basement and I can pick it up just fine all the way up in the loft on my laptop...

I could definitely start whoring it out to my neighbors...

with my G connection I am able to go to the 1st unit in our complex (we are in unit 6) and I get 75% connection. not bad.

but the security issue is a must. i have my networks locked to only allow my computers MAC address
