Setting up server..HOW DO I...

I'm getting another PC..I was thinking of using my current one as a server..
Is there a way to do this...
Can it be done with windows98 as the OS, using the IP# assigned to the cable modem?
I need info on how this is done..
What programs / software do I need to install to make my PC a web server?
Please post links to sources of information & tutorials & products on this topic..

Yes most times you can use your pc as server.

I suggest to take linux and configure it good. BUT, I don't know where you want to use it for, beacuse most times you only can trasfer 1GB per month or so....

1st you will need a static IP (not something all cable services provide) and second you will be showing a large amount of upload which often sets alarm bells ringing. Read the terms of your cable service.

Actually that is incorrect....AT@T set me up with a static IP for about 10 months.

I would not recommend running a server from house using your cable modem though, the second the cable company catches wind of this your toast.

Alright.... okay.... if you're really serious spacedog, the first thing you need to do is ALOT of reading.

Second thing is go get a real OS.

Third is decide which web software you wanna use. No clue? Go get Apache and start reading.

Next.... go research some DNS software, because paying for some weak ass third party dns forwarding service is for kids.

Next.... you're gonna need mail software too. Guess what... more reading and research.

Next... FTP software. Cuz no one is gonna mail you a disk.

Now... assuming you go this far... and have made all your decisions on the software you're gonna use... be prepared to stick several thousands of dollars into software and hardware for it, because your Win98 Packard Bell ain't gonna get it done.

Once you've reached this point... now you can start installing everything and setting up. This should be somewhere around month 4 from where we started. Only a few more months from here before you're good enough to have all the glitches and shit worked out.

Might sound sarcastic or smartass... but it's the truth.

Man, this is good stuff. I do know a guy who hosts a shitload of adult sites from his house. He has 2 SERVERS, not desktops. We're talking twin processors and 1GB+ RAM running Solaris. Then he got a T3 brought to his house from Sprint. That's the ONLY way to really host things from home. Unless you can afford to do that, just cough up the $25-$100 a month that you would need for a REAL host. There is a time to be cheap and when you're choosing a host IS NOT the time.

Try to host on a cable modem and see what happens. You'll get a nastygram from your cable co in no time. You'll be lucky if they just shut you down for excessive bandwidth usage.

I'm not interested in becomin a host..I just was looking at the idea of hosting my own stuff..I don't want to start a hosting company...

After you mentioned cable co's getting upset about porn, I pretty much gave up on the hope of hosting my stuff at home..
