Here's a few points for all you noobs that should help you... a bit. They're quite basic, but most newbies screw up on them regardless. There are many more, so feel free to add points.
#1: Work. Don't waste your time fucking around and complaining about your lousy income. If you lack the discipline to put enough work into your sites, you won't get rich.
#2: Work smart, not hard. If you are doing things manually that could just as well be done automatically, you are wasting time that could be used for development and promotion. You're in the computer business, so if you don't automate you are doing something wrong.
#3: Be original. Original sites can make more money than standard ones. If your site is exactly like thousands of other ones out there, you will have a lot more competition than if your site is one of a kind. Just because there are thousands of people doing something does not mean it's the best way to make money, believe me. (in other words, starting yet another teen tgp will not make you the new Bill Gates)
#4: Experiment. If something doesn't work, change it. If it does work, try and improve it. Trial and error works.
#5: Use multiple sponsors. Add new ones regularly and get rid of the ones that don't work out. A 1:6000 with one sponsor may become a 1:200 with another one. Try multiple sales pitches for a sponsor to see what works best.
#6: Learn from the competition. Look at their sites for new ideas if you don't have any of your own. Don't, however, copy their content, designs or whatever! (stealing is bad, getting inspiration is good)
#7: Have patience. Don't expect immediate results from everything. You probably won't be making $100k a month after half a year in the business. Continuity pays in the long run.
#8: Drop things that don't work. Once you find out something isn't working out, just drop it. Don't waste time and money on things you know will never work. Be honest to yourself, and know when to admit an idea has failed.
#9: Don't be half-hearted. When you go for something, take the time to do it right or don't do it all.
#10: Learn to promote your sites and take the time to do it. People won't find them by themselves, no matter how good your sites are. So, invest significant amounts of time in all kinds of promotion, and try to get as many traffic sources as possible.
