    quick seo question

How/deep/can/your/directories be before you get a penalty? would it be better to have:

    bling.com/cats/furry_cats/persian

    or:

    cats.bling.com/furry_cats/persian?

    Thanks!

i'd be tempted to go the deeper directory and not the vhost.
vhosts used to work very well with altavista, but as with lots of tricks they suddenly stopped working as well..

I'm not really sure either have any difference in google.. It's probably the smallest of issues and not really be worth concerning yourself about. But as a basic rule keep things as simple as possible for the engine.

      doesnt matter at all

domain.com/keryword/keyword-keyword/keyword-keyword-keyword/keyword/keyword/ will still be indexed in Google.

Actually Google only spiders three/four directories deep. I am uncertain of the exact number, however I know it is no more than four. So limit the amount of directories you use.

From my experience doing SEO for many clients, anything at the root level (ie www.domain.com/keyword/keyphrase.html seems to do much better in Google than any type of keyphrase.domain.com setup. That's not to say it won't get indexed, but just that it always seems to rank better on the highly competitive phrases if it's as close to www.domain.com/root_url as possible.
