when did TGP site start using small thumbnails as previews for the galleries?

do tgps that do this get a better click through and ultimately make more money or is it dependant on something else?

i have a free site but i want to find out what other types of site i should concentrate building before i do any more that is why i am asking abotu the tgp and whether it is more profitable to build one using thumbnail previews or regulalar text links.
