    Mac vs. PC prices

    Mac G5:

    1.8Ghz
    2GB DDR400 SDRAM (PC3200)
    160GB - 7200rpm
    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
    DVD-R/CD-RW

total from the mac store: $3,799

    PC:

    Pentium 4 2.4ghz 800FSP, with the mobo: $233
    2GB DDR400 PC3200 : $328
    200GB - 7200rpm - 8MB cache - Serial ATA : $228
    ATI Radeon 9800 Pro : $305
    DVD-R/CD-RW ~ $50
    A nice case ~ $100

total (when you build yourself): less than $1250

Mac's look nice and all, despite the fancy and crappy user interface, they're a huge ripoff IMO. Why pay 3 times as much unless you are rich?

Because it won't crash every 5 minutes and you won't have to worry about every virus that comes along.

whats the last windows OS you ever used, win95?

and the viruses are only targeting windows products, i bet OSX has as many vulnerabilities, that are just not being exploited, since its not worth it for the hackers.

Mac user's seem to turn the debate over to OSX vs Windows all the time. We're talking about hardware here, PC users have a lot of options for software including the operating system, but my post is only about hardware

My newest PC cost me around $700.00 for parts.

                              Built it myself.

                              It does the job nicely.

Seriously tho Lane... I am not a big Mac user -- but the "feel" of the OS is really important to a lot of people...

Mac just feels more friendly -- more comfortable... People will pay extra for that friendly feeling... It's kindof like paying extra $ for a fine dining experience...

Mac is a luxury item -- status symbol... Something to play with in the coffee shop as u sip some on some fancy beans...

If u drive around in LA u won't see billboards for "PC" -- but you will see some classy Mac ads... they're not stupid... PC's are for everyone now -- even snobby people

notice my first question. "Why pay 3 times as much unless you are rich?". I dont see a problem with people with money to waste buying it just because its fancy and luxury. My point is, you're getting the same hardware for so much more expensive.

We just ordered one for the office. It will cost justify itself in the reduced problems. We gave up on XP after needed to reinstall 2-3 times a year. Our G4's have been a pleasure. I think all our desktops and laptops will be MACs very soon.

it's kinda like buying an overpriced luxury car.

but even those dont really exist, because they come with lots of kickass equipment that others dont have, and they cost a lot to the dealer when they are imported.

anyway, its just another thread about some argument that wont go anywhere, lol

You are funny. I designed and supervised installation of large data network installations for most of the School Districts in AZ, the Dept of Education and numerous Cities and Counties in multiple States. I taught Data Networking at both Community College and University level.

I just know a better thing for our applications when I see one. Formatting, reinstalling an OS and applications on Windows takes time. Restoring data takes time, dealing with viruses takes time, add on software needed to secure Windows costs time and money and my time is valuable. I prefer to use it earn money.

                                                  Macs are just plain better.

I was a lead tech at Dell for fortune 500 ceo's and we develop software for windows boxes. So i think it's fair to say that I know windows.

But you couldnt pay me enough to actually use one for anything other than testing our own products, and I wont ever put a windows machine on a network.

Til you switch to mac you'll never know what it is like to just have a computer that is a tool, an extension of you... not something you constantly have to try to protect, coax, fix, uninstall, patch, firewall, antivirus, yada yada yada

Botom line is that macs are for people who want to focus on their work. PC's are for people who are either bargain hunters or like fucking with their computers instead of working.

Only downside of macs is that financial software is still a year from being on par with pc's.

                                                  What do i know though?

Sounds to me like Mac users are too lazy. If "time is money" is an issue, I'm way more productive on a PC, and fixing/protecting my PC takes unsignificant amount of time for me.

Lane has a point. PC hardware IS way cheaper.

However you fail to mention the difference between an AMD processor based system and an INTEL.

Again, prices would be even lower for the same quality hardware.

Guess it all depends what your time is worth. 10 hours of my time covers the cost differential.

cleaner from discreet.com is the professionals choice for encoding and final cut is the pros choice for editing..

cleaner exports to wmv, real, quicktime, you name it... and your movies will be smaller and cost you less in bandwidth than if you used the regular old windows media encoder.

how much is bandwidth these days anyways? like 50 cents a gig? a buck a gig?

if you use windows.. ask yourself...

is dcom enabled? if so.. why? if you dont know, do you know how to disable it? cause it's really the source of all the biggest security holes on the fuckin machines anyways.

not to mention that windows machines dont salt their passwords so hacking a windows password takes about 4 seconds with a decent machine!

Even with all that being said, I'm looking at like $7000 every time I try to configure one that's on the same level as my PC. Eventually I'll switch... the farther away from Microsoft, the happier I'll be.

and as soon as they port things like photoshop and studio mx to pc *nix, i'll switch to that.

this really isn't worth arguing. mac people will always be mac people, and pc people will always be pc people.

it comes down to preference. they are both tools to do the same job. just like some people use walmart tools, craftsman tools, or snap-on.

if you buy a mac for it's "status"... that's just fucking lame. i don't feel a reason to be a stuck up snob because i have a nice computer, and my computer doesn't make me any better than anyone else just because of the label.

sure, i might have some bragging rights here and there, but it doesn't improve me as a person.

both systems have their ups and downs, and you roll with it. macs are easy and thoughtless to work. but pc's aren't as difficult to make work properly and reliably as mac people seem to think around here. i have very little trouble with my pc, and it doesn't take 10 hours to get it that way. i also in all the time i have operated computers, have not got a virus of any consequence on any of _my_ machines, but i'm not reckless with what i do.

point is, arguing really isn't worth it. and constantly spamming the apple "switch" site is pointless too.. that's getting tiresome.

you figure out the best tool to make you the most productive, and what you feel is within the most reasonable cost (be it a $500 pc, or a top-end $4000 mac or pc workstation). that's what it comes down to. should you try both, in good configurations? sure, see which you flow better with. then make your decision and use your tools

So you're speaking from experience of not owning or using one on a daily basis. I think it's simple if you're not smart enough to have owned and used one or to understand benefits or advantages then you don't need to be using a mac anyway. Macs are for creative types not clones. So upgrade away with your Microsuck owned computer and have a good time.
