Simple tech question

Buddy has a computer that is fried (won't turn on at all), and he wants me to try to get his data off the hard drive for him.

It's Win98SE FAT32. I assume I can't install this hard drive as a slave in a WinXP NTFS system and get the data off of it? Or can I?

Just thought I would ask because it would save me time if I can.

NTFS can read FAT 32

but not the other way around

You might try a new power supply in his machine and save yourself some trouble.

He said it locked up on him while he was shutting it down so he pulled the plug out of the wall while the power was still on. Doh!

So it could be the power supply or perhaps even something on the motherboard.

It's an old P3 so I think this was the excuse he was looking for to replace it. It's an IPC, so it's not really worth the effort to fix anyway. (If you've owned one of those pieces of crap before you will know what I'm talking about... nothing but the cheapest parts inside)

With all the dirt inside the case, I'm surprised it worked at all.

I think you'll be able to get the data by doing it that way, but not the actual programs.

Ya, it worked, I burned all his files to a CD-R.

I'll let him fuck around with swapping parts if he wants to waste his money on it.
