What are proxy servers?

what are proxy servers? I believe someone said they change IP addresses, but im not sure. if that is what it is, how does it work, and where do you get them? and do they change your ip address if you have internet cable?

if that is not what proxy servers do, is there any program that will change my ip address? I do something else on the side besides porn, and there is a good chance that people will be trying to hack me, and since i have a static ip currently, i need something that will keep changing my ip for me, to minimize my risk. thank you

I think proxys are like a middle man. You make your request to them then they make the real request wich results in them as being the referer instead of you.

Or something like that :o)

Problem is that it is usally logged so you still are not really safe.

Hmmm the only people I know who use proxys are generally up to no good. Or they are still using AOL.

have in mind that NOT all proxies are anonymous, a large number of proxies can carry your IP.

I understand your anger Steve, with my link i tried to give some info without having in mind the hitbot situation, i guess because it hasn't affect me yet. On the other hand, if cancerfactory or someother webmaster wants to cheat, it might not learn now what proxies are, but for sure he/she will learn it tommorow.

Fortunately we catch most all the shit that people try to pull on us.

Steve - To be totally honest I wasnt real sure what a proxy was myself. You should be able to tell from my first post.

So being the way I am I went to the search engine and looked. And simply posted what I had found. I am sorry if this is/was damaging but I really didnt think of it that way at the time.

Sorry if I flew off the handle, but in the past 30 days I have had to learn about hitbots. Getting hammered by guys using them for the second time in 2 years (that I even know of) pretty much gave me reason to take a crash course. I'm just worried that even honest discussion about them can just make it worse. Because it is threads like this that got me to looking for info. And if I can find it, we're in trouble. The sad thing is that it easier than ever to jump into TGPs and get going. I can't see any reason to cheat. But people do, every day.
