the problem i'm having is whenever you have a transparent (or translucent, in this case) png, IE seems to render the png in solid gray. i used to have a logo on another site for a short time with a png because of its drop shadow with transparency, but it always rendered the transparent part in gray.

i found some sort of workaround on a site, but it's very long, drawn out, and it probably means i'm going to have to get the browser type, then implement the code based on that (and the workaround code is pretty big). that is a serious pain in the arse, unless i'm doing something wrong with the png's. just saving them in imageready as a png-24, and calling them directly in html. works fine in mozilla.

edit: i was reading on another site as well that there have been a lot of issues with png and ie. there's even a petition to M$ to include proper support. m$ promised, but hasn't delivered, apparently, even against the w3c recommendation...

i know, but gif's won't properly render certain transparencies that i've found. and they don't do very well on translucency. i'm using the image for a translucent background on a table, and it won't render right in GIF (alpha transparency?).

Gif's have very crappy support for transparency, png's have excellent support... just that those fuckwits at M$ are lazy and won't add proper support into IE...

I wasn't debating which is the superior format.... If MS adds support for it, I'm sure things will change.... but you gotta use what works for the present.

ok, it works for displaying png images, but i can't get it to work with 'background=""' (i.e. only works with img src)

maybe someone out there with a little more coding experience can get this to work?? here the link:

that link above i gave will work with png's in an img src tag only. you can set it to a background in a div, i got it to work, but i hit another wall. it appears what i'm using now will only work on a per-graphic basis, and since i'm using 4 div's in the document (or 4 table cells), it only works on the first cell. looks like i'd have to go through and write a whole new version (or modify the existing one into 4 versions) for each cell. that's a little too inefficient for my tastes, i think i'll just say fuck it, and people with IE can look at a gray background

anyways, here's the link you can use to make it work in a div background
