    HELP PLZ (hard math problem)

    I need a problem solved. Plz help.

    Find constants a,b,c, and d such that the graph of the function:

    f(x)=ax^3+bx^2+cx+d
    has a local extreme at (0.3) and a point of inflection at (1,-1).

    If any one can answer this then A MILLION THANK YOU'S

    If no one can; then can you give me some links where I can ask to get a quick answer.

    PLEASE

                                        The kids gonna flunk anyway. That problem isn't about the answer, it's about how to draw graphs with descriptions.

                                        The idea is that they describe the points of interest, where the graph changes direction and where it's centered and you draw it.
                                        One thing, I forgot this last detail: the Biz Markie will always prevail.

                                          i chekced the that geocities website but i did not understand anything... But i guess this one is true too.

                                          Take the deriviative of the equation and then set it to zero. And then take the second deriviative of the equation and set it to 1. And take the third deriviative and set it -1. This way you will have 3 equations and simply solve all oof them and then you will get the answers...

                                                    That's not quite right but you're on the right track. The first derivative will give you the location of the extrema because it's zero at that point (no slope) but taking the derivatives with constantes only gives you 3ax²+2bx+c=0, meaning you have to know how to sketch graphs to start with. And since you know the extrema is at 3,0 anyway it doesn't help much. But since you know the point of inflection and the graph is third order, you know the other zero is at 2, -5.

                                                      f(x)=ax^3+bx^2+cx+d
                                                      f'(x)=3ax^2+2bx+c
                                                      f''(x)=6ax+2

                                                      Local Extreme (0/3):

                                                      0 = 3ax^2 + 2bx + c
                                                      0 = c

                                                      POI ( 1/-1):

                                                      0 = 6ax + 2
                                                      -1 = 6a + 2
                                                      -3 = 6a
                                                      a = -0.5

                                                      P(0/3):

                                                      3 = ax^3+bx^2+cx+d
                                                      3 = d

                                                      Now, insert all variables to get b using the POI:

                                                      -1=ax^3+bx^2+cx+d
                                                      -1 = -0.5x^3 + bx^2 + 3
                                                      x = 1

                                                      -1 = -0.5 + b + 3
                                                      -3.5 = b

                                                      Complete graph:

                                                      f(x) = -0.5x^3 - 3.5x^2 + 3

                                                      Just trying to see if this is correct:

                                                      f'(x) = -1.5x^2 - 7x
                                                      0 = -1.5x^2 - 7x
                                                      0 = x*(-1.5x -7)

                                                      x1 = 0 correct
                                                      x2 = 4.6

                                                      Oh, this is fun

How many goats would he have in a years time ??

                                                                                    y'=0 and therefore c=0
                                                                                    then you plug in (0,3) into your y and get d=3

                                                                                    Then you take y" and you get a=2b/6 and you find out what a is then you plug it back in and get your b.

                                                                                    I didnt figure that out yet cause I just wanted to post a reply.
