I would recommend either going out and getting a managed dedicated server OR read up at:

onlamp.com - Orielly's online network of documentation for everything.

Give me a msg on ICQ: 4930562 and we can work something out for your if your interested in getting extensive help as you learn unix and host with us.

                Ohh and one more thing:

If you run FreeBSD (Operating System) definitely visit:

                http://www.freebsddiary.org

PS> When choosing OS's for your new dedicated server take it from the pro's and choose FREEBSD

We will manage, monitor and maintain your dedicated server, all you have to worry about is uploading your files! And we have some of the best package prices for managed dedicated servers around - at only $0.50/G of traffic.

Check out our packages at http://www.chilihost.com or email me at [email protected] for a great deal (ps, if you ask nicely I will throw in 20% more bandwidth for FREE!!)

                  Cheers,

                  Luke

right on. thanks for the links.

the host i'm looking at has managed service, but i want to at least be able to understand what to ask for, and make life easier on everyone.

Here's some things to think about when getting a dedicated server.

How much disk space to you need. plan for the future. Most servers today come with 40 or 80 gig drives, which is fine unless your planning to do a lot of video.

How much bandwidth to you need? Do you want it by the gigs (like 100 gig/month), or by bandwidth? Bandwidth is measured in mbps (megabits per second) and 1 mbps is about 320 gig per month. You can get it capped, meaning you can't exceed that amount or 95%, which means you take the max bandwidth you using during the billing period and pay at the 95% rate.

How much RAM do you need? Go with 512 mb, even if you have to pay a little more.

Check that you have php and perl installed, almost everyone has those today.

Decide on a backup strategy for your server. Your harddisk can die at any time and you'll loose everything on it. I like to keep a second drive in the server and copy everything over to it once a day. You can also keep a copy on a local drive.

                        That's a start.
