I've been doing this for a while but I've never been to one of these things. What are they like and why do you go?

The conventions really are a must if you want to make it in this industry. You get to meet all of the people you've run into on the boards. People will be much more willing to do business with you after they've met you.

And God only knows who you will meet, and what they might be able to do for you when you return home.

These days, they are not nearly as valuable as 3-4 years ago. Too many kids wanting to party, forgetting about business. But, if you need to get to know people they are worth going to. I sent 3 employees, but decided to skip it personally.

Florida is a great local for the show. The hotel is amazing. I personally wish they would move from Vegas as it is getting very boring going there every January.

I felt very old at the parties last year and I'm only 45. I saw some guys walking around that looked like they weren't even 18 yet.

I know the feeling.. i got talked into doing a wet t-shirt contest (seattle bbq) at the age of 37..then i looked into the audience and it was 18 year olds in the room gawking... i felt like sending them to their rooms ..brats

Yes the hotel in Florida is a great place for a show. But still far too many idiots there for the wrong reasons. I can recall parties last year in Miami that were so packed you could not move. Isn't the point to do business? ARS does it right, they throw a classy affair where you can actually conduct business.

Whats the percentage of people who do porn full time and people who just want to hang, fool around, and act like they are major players?

People think it would be unbearably hot in Florida in August, but that's just not the case.
The hotel is right on the ocean - not across the street, not near it... you walk out the back door and down off of the patio and you are IN the ocean. So there's plenty of wind coming off of the water at all times. Really helps to keep the temperature down.
Plus you're going to be inside 98% of the time in the air conditioning anyway, so who cares? And if you want to go out by the pool, then you *want* it to be warm so you can get some sun and enjoy the pool water.

Besides, nothing beats being able to go down to the hot tub at 2 in the morning after a long night and relaxing without freezing your ass off...

Inthestars, I hate to say this, but it kinda goes by the age (when you're at the convention, anyway).
You can pretty much - not always, but pretty much - be assured that if a person looks less than 30 years old, they're just there to party.

In the biz overall? I'd say 80% are here to enjoy the 'perks' and free porn, the other 20% are here to make money. Whether that's part-time or full-time doesn't matter, as some folks honestly don't *want* to devote full-time hours to this and are happy with an extra grand to pay bills each month.
