    Geolocation Services

Anyone able to recommend self-hosted geolocation options to use with AV integration?

MaxMind is probably the most readily available service for GeoIP, but GeoIP is never 100% accurate.

They have two paid tiers that I am familiar with, an on-demand API service lookup, and a local database that you can download periodically.

They do have a free tier, but it's not as accurate as their paid tier.

I was thinking about creating something for this and offering as a service, but it's too expensive for the data and really somewhat of a risk. Lawsuits are going to happen.

I think maxmind is more or less the same pricing. I do use the free version for some projects and i can say, it's quite bad and not really accurate, I think its like 75% accurate. You may not want to go that route.

$400/year for one server which is all you'd need. If you have multiple servers you could still just have the geo detection done on one server.

There are some pretty cheap pay as you go apis: https://ipdata.co/pricing.html

I use both MaxMind and IP2Location paid databases for integration with my RTB platform, while my use case is not specifically for AV, it can certainly be used for this application as well.

Well, that's a different story. Are you certain the ip/city version is only $400 a year? It showed me $3950 or something similar when I checked. Def have to re-check on this. Thanks

I just checked again. I'm talking about the db itself, not the api, I didn't check on those prices, and it's showing $3,980 for the year (with city option). Am I missing something?

For some of the other projects I needed long/lat and that was like $6980 a year, so I just went with the free db from maxmind at the time.

Select pricing for standard license, not the site license (default).

ip-api.com is great and affordable. i've been using their API for years. we do about a million queries a day without any issues. much better data and lower resources compared to maxmind.
