I use Gmail for spamboxes, so I don't really care...

P.S. All their services suck - uncomfortable, clumsy, unreliable with no support at all.

Up until a couple days ago I tried really hard to rock with Google. Their customer service always been terrible, but the convenience of running a company 100% through Google was convenient once you learned your way around.

Now that they're dropping their domain and workspace service like it has digital COVID, I'm out.

Can't be teasing me with all that convenience, then snatching it from me 😤

I have been using Google admin to manage my accounts for a while... it is ok, but I don't really love it. And sometimes when I try sending an email to a gmail-managed email account, it just never seems to arrive, and not even in my junk mail.

When I think I will probably do this week is switch everything over to Microsoft. I am supporting a couple of clients who are using Microsoft Admin to manage the users and licenses in their companies and, while more complex, seems more intuitive.

Google's support though is pretty good. It's easy to get someone in chat to help, and almost as easy to get someone on the phone.

Question for you: I sign-in to various services such as Linode using Google authentication. If I switch my email provider away from gmail, do you know if I will lose this service too?

                  That's an interesting point.
I've only used "Sign in with gmail" once.
But other people must have dozens of accounts they use like that.

I don't think that's going anywhere anytime soon. But it's Google, so... 🤷

Gmail remains the most popular email platform with over 1.8 billion users worldwide. As of April 2022, Gmail holds 29.5% of the email client market share.

Why in the Fuck would Google close your GMAIL account??????

                              That would be Self-defeating .

after end of 2023, inactive accounts over 2 years old will start being deleted.
The era of market dominance is coming to a close. Expect less free.
They are already cutting back on Goggle drive upload capacity.

I can't believe youtube still allows me to upload my crap videos.

                                https://blog.google/technology/safet...ount-policies/

To reduce this risk, we are updating our inactivity policy for Google Accounts to 2 years across our products. Starting later this year, if a Google Account has not been used or signed into for at least 2 years, we may delete the account and its contents – including content within Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Drive, Meet, Calendar) and Google Photos.

The policy only applies to personal Google Accounts, and will not affect accounts for organizations like schools or businesses. This update aligns our policy with industry standards around retention and account deletion and also limits the amount of time Google retains your unused personal information.

We are going to roll this out slowly and carefully, with plenty of notice:

While the policy takes effect today, it will not immediately impact users with an inactive account — the earliest we will begin deleting accounts is December 2023.
We will take a phased approach, starting with accounts that were created and never used again.
Before deleting an account, we will send multiple notifications over the months leading up to deletion, to both the account email address and the recovery email (if one has been provided).
                                My opinion.
Before gmail accounts will be deleted, Google will probably stop all new free gmail accounts. Become part of a suite of products. Google drive, goggle music, youtube will be part of a bundle. But I will be dead, nothing is forever.

completely realistic and normal response to google tightening up on dead accounts.

the "sky is falling" message of the OP is pretty ridiculous.
