You know how kids are, I guess he panicked and it just got worse. They probably cut his hand up another 50% trying to get it out of there. I remember a few years ago, watching Trauma (or something like that), some kid came in with his father after a DIY accident. Somehow the kid had completely smashed his right hand with a hammer. When they told him that it probably wasn't going to be possible to "fix it", and that he was going to need an operation (i.e. amputation - at least, I think that's what the doc meant), he just went apeshit. It's only natural that people panic like that...
