    Question about Bitcoin core

I installed and let the program update its database.

However I had to reboot the computer today and it appears that it has to update the ENTIRE database again.

Is that going to happen each time I reboot the machine?

No, it should not. It will only bring the database up to date from when you shut it down. So every time you open it, it has to sync with the blockchain. I leave mine open 24/7.

        this.

        to OP
every few minutes new blocks are generated, if your PC is not online then those (newly generated blocks) doesnt get added to your database., so whenever you come online it gets (download/verifies) missed blocks.
