I always thought the flat earthers were just a common joke. Nobody really believes this preposterous idea, right? I mean, did they read so much Pratchett that they applied fantasy book ideas to life? What next? They'll search wardrobes for Narnia?

Funny how that works. I have never ran into one of those types that didn't believe most conspiracy's. From Loch Ness to aliens and area 51.
Whereas I spent more of my life explaining them for what they are but nobody wants to hear it. Folks want to believe. You can see this play in politics I'm sure and is why it is easy to spread misinformation.

Most have some basis in fact but taken to incorrect concussions.

Little do people know that the first photo of Nessie were in fact real photos.
But if I told you it was a old retired circus elephant swimming, would you believe it ?
And the locals at the time were silent because of the tourism. They were making money from it. Everything after that were faked because of the stir it created.

I still wonder what happened to the elephant. He was old and may have died or taken away by the locals. But a island in the loch was nicknamed elephant island then because the elephant would swim out to it all the time.

At one time I was writing a book debunking all these conspiracies. But with the fact they had in origin. Most do have some fact that is improperly concluded.
I still have 30 pages of it. Lost some in a hard drive failure 20 years ago.

The area 51 alien story also had fact in basis.
The skinny is while the cold war and disinformation was rampant, the US was testing pressurized cabins while they were developing a 'SR71 type' aircraft, flying higher and faster than the soviets could shoot down. The plane crashed and the alien was a test monkey. That is what they used to test pressurized cabins from about that time to even NASA in the early 60's.
Obviously, the monkey was well burned from the jet fuel. So, someone really did 'see something', they just did not know what it was.
The government wanted to keep the disinformation and even would feed the stories after they started to make one think we may have captured alien tech. Not so.

My wife was watching a Netflix documentary about flat earthers and I stopped for a few minutes to watch it.

I believe these people are trolling. They're intelligent enough to sound intelligent...which means they're intelligent enough to know that the Earth is round and that it doesn't take any detailed science to prove it. Most people can infer that the world is round by what they see. So it's just a too dumb of an argument to even entertain. They know exactly what they're doing.
