The British were called limeys because everywhere they went they planted lime trees. They found that adding limes to their water prevented scurvy.

Limey was a derogatory term used for sailors in the Royal Navy who used to put LEMON in their grog ( watered down rum ) which they later found to help prevent scurvy. They later changed that to limes which did not have as much vitamin C and was much less effective against scurvy.Comment
