format second harddrive

I just got an extra hard drive. The documentation is slim to none.

I followed their directions but what it says isnt happening.

Does anyone know how to format a second hard drive on XP or any good websites with instructions?

yea just got to "my computer" right click on the drive and select format. won't work on the primary drive but works fine on a secondary.

To be safe, unplug your actual OS drive, leaving the new one plugged ( This is to avoid to erase the old dribve in confusion).

Boot from a floppy windows start up disk.

at the prompt, type Fdisk

This will bring you to a screen wher eyou can " install" the drive. Once done, reboot with diskette, then format the hard drive ( format c: ).

One formatted, replug the original one, and reboot. Your computer should work and the new drive will be there.


PS: I need help on Red Hat 9.00 to install the OS. The prob is that I have 4 ide drive ( 40 gigs each) to be put in Raid ( stripping mode) , Do you need drib=vers for th eraid card to be configured?

Now, I get the four drives as hde, hdf,hdg.hdi.

You should be able to do this right from XP. Use the Run... function from the Start menu and enter compmgmt.msc as the program to run. A computer management window will come up, and in the tree on the left you can select the Disk Management option. From there you can see your new disk and can partition and format it. Good luck.

XP will see if
windows explorer
right click the new drive Format it...

Pick the right one, LOL

let me add. when I boot up the comp xp isnt recognizing a new drive. Maybe I have the jumpers wrong.

if XP dosn't see the drive then you're jumpers are wrong
