Read through the first 4 or 5 chapters to get the basic shit down... then give yourself a "project" to work on.
Reference the book as needed.
Also, jump on IRC. There are chatrooms on efnet (#php) where you can ask some questions if you get stuck.
These methods always works for me when learning new langs

nice nice... keep them coming if you got them.
We've never really *had* to learn PHP for anything.
But there are a couple little things that we are doing that will be hit a lot and used by a lot of virtual hosters.
Since mod_perl isn't a very available option, we're forced to deal with mod_php. Yay.
Oh well.. could be fun

There are a ton of sites, I personally learned PHP from trial and error a few years ago and readon books. A good site with some descent information is www.phpbuilder.com .
