    Which firewall?

Which firewall do you use, and why?

I'm currently using Sygate Pro as I have for about 3 years now. It works great but, I'm just wondering what's new & what everyone else uses now

    Thanks...

Software firewalls don't do much, but Zonealarm is the best software one there is. Better to get a hardware firewall ;)

Gotta agree about Cisco PIX, if you can afford it.

For a software based solution, Microsoft ISA Server.

And when you can't afford anything at all, IPSEC. Oh, wait, no one else has a Windows 2000 server but me...

i used to use sygate, but that shit pisses me off. it was blocking 50% of my b/w... just plain denying it. even when i was downloading shit, it would just cut off half the b/w, and make things not connect well. right now i just use the default M$ one with a hardware firewall. fuck sygate

                  Watchguard Firebox II.

I have been using it for just over a year now and have been very happy. I love the web interface for the box... very intuitive and easy to use.

Is that the little red box that blinks when you have something dropped from an ACL?

Not had a single problem with Sygate. Prefer it to ZoneAlarm. And as MS can't write an OS without security holes, I'm not inclined to risk using their firewall.

non-unix hardware firewalls/router/switch combos are good for sharing internet & they will stop/block a lot of the people scanning your box.

A good software firewall with rules on the fly, IN ADDITION to a good hardware firewall, is the best way to go in my opinion.

Used to use BlackIce a couple of years back when it was really popular.... It seems to have fallen out of favour these days. I don't know how good it is now.

BlackIce is not worth poop, tried Norton also, I'm using ZoneAlarm and a router now and have been for a long time. Norton is ok, I like ZoneAlarm better

ZoneAlarm Pro has a very weak security shield. It's mainly for beginners who need a good-looking GUI and simple port/packet detection and blocking. For something more advanced and better, I'd go with Sygate Pro, or Tiny Personal Firewall.

It's quite long, but very interesting with a small section on firewalls towards the end.
