I have an old hp computer without an HDMI port so I bought a USB to HDMI adapter. I have an old TV without an HDMI port so I bought an HDMI to RCA adapter. I bought an HDMI cable to connect the adapters. Device manager shows the TV/External monitor and I have an updated AMD video driver. The TV has color bars on it but no picture.

Both the TV and Computer are in good working order. Just that the TV is without a picture when acting as an external monitor.

Any suggestions.

Stupid question, but did you install all of the drivers that you need for usb -> hdmi?

But I'm not sure exactly what they mean by piping the signal to the PC.. Do they mean like sending the TV signal to the computer via usb the other way for recording, or something else?

The idea of usb to video is kind of flakey... requires a lot of conversion in software/cpu you could probably get a used videocard for $5 from somewhere that would do the job better.

Random question: Does USB to HDMI send audio? I thought it basically emulates VGA.

+1 for VGA and 3.5mm if that's available then return the adapters if you can.

New video card. New monitor / tv. Reading what you were trying to do caused me physical pain.

I was running S-video but decided to try HDMI-video out to see what the differences are. The S-Video adapters worked fine the HDMI adapters present only the color bars but no picture. There must be a solution but nothing I have tried thus far has been a solution.

I am good to go now. Streaming movies to my old High Def TV, via HDMI. Perfect picture. I bought another adapter that did the trick. In total around $60.00 for all of the adapters, cables.

Actually it was a bit worse scenario than I first described. The HP computer did not have a VGA port, or a DVI port, or a HDMI port or a Display port. The TV only had RCA connections and an S-Video port.

Thru the use of proper adapters I now have the TV as a big monitor and/or stream movies to it via HDMI with a 42" HD Screen for about $60.00 worth of hardware.

I could have spent hundreds of dollars on the adapters, but buying via Newegg, Walmart, Amazon and searching carefully, the three adapters, the RCA cables, and the HDMI cable for around $60.00 was the total cost.

I could have also spent hundreds on a new TV and or a computer as some suggested. Thanks but no thanks.

That's not possible. You listed every type of video connection available on modern computers and said it had none of them? What else is left?

Unless you were using something like a Commodore 64 with only a composite out.

Yes it is possible and is fact. The only ports on the computer are 6 USB ports. No display ports of any type. It is an HP and is about 5 years old.

after just completing a 100k smart home/4k tv upgrade, I've learned the hard way HDMI is very very finicky. Especially when converting it or extending it. The best answer was provided up top. I think it's impossible to jump hdmi over that many hops so to speak. But if nothing has an hdmi port why the heck you using hdmi. You'd want to do any extenders/converters over cat6a.

Well it must be an all in one computer with the monitor built in then.

Or maybe it was some sort of bizarre computer that came with one of those usb-c graphics adapters and no internal video card. Sounds like a real turd if that's the case.

It works great and while it is undoubedtly not as good as good as your 100 grand investment I am entirely pleased with my less than 100 dollar investment. It works beautifully. It is what I now use to stream movies. I have four other computers for other puposes, but do really need to upgrade them all sooner than later.

I have used S-Video before and HDMI is an improvement upon that and that is why I went to HDMI. I find it to be entirely satisfactory.

You're better off buying an Android(TV) Box and hooking that up to your TV.

100 grand, wow. I had an old TV and an old computer and did a little googling about various adapters so thought I would give it a shot since I knew that the cost would be less than a hundred bucks after pricing the hardware. What the hell, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

It works great and while it is undoubedtly not as good as good as your 100 grand investment I am entirely pleased with my less than 100 dollar investment. It works beautifully. It is what I now use to stream movies. I have four other computers for other puposes, but do really need to upgrade them all sooner than later.

I?m talking 100 grand, maybe a tad more on oled tvs, a rack set up etc. i ran a mile of cat 6a cable, did all the terminations etc. all the lutron lights had to be done by a programmer as they dont let you touch it. I did all the electrical too. The cool part was the guy went over the top for me & integrated all my philips hue bulbs too. So with 1 button the art screen lifts up, the shades go down & the hue goes to whatever color of the device you?re using, for example blue for blueray. I made custom speaker tops out of brazillian cherry & finished them with 15 coats of hand rubbed gunstock oil. Now it?s onto the garage. Putting in a lift & running piping for all my air tools. Fun stuff. I like working with my hands and people saying wow who made this?
