Back in the.. early 2000's i used to use some sofware to send mass emails to subscribers... I want to do it again with an old list .. but all i find now are cloud based services.. i want software solucion that mounts its own email server and sends from there... any recomendations? open source shit?

Check out YNOT Mail. It's a service not software, but its a better way to send mass emails.

If you are sending an "old" email list... You will have a high bounce rate. You'll need to have that list cleaned before you do anything.

It sure is possible. I had a client that was recently using a Lyris server to send out bulk email.
