Tech External harddrive problem...

Wanted to acces it but couldn't find it in my computer anymore. Changed some cables... still not shown and/or accessible. The harddrive is not completely dead... it sounds normal... no ticking or other strange sounds. Also the light on it works so i assume not a power problem...

Anyone knows what this could be? Could the data be recovered?

Try to get to the data with a Linux live CD. If you can, copy everything. That could be your one and only hope.

Windows 10? Do you see the drive under disk management? Right click on Windows Icon. Choose Disk Management. You might see and assign a letter to the disk, Then see it.

No the drive is not under diskmanagement... it's nowhere to be found...

Maybe Windows went stupid in regards to that drive. It's Windows. We have been able to access drives we thought were dead with a Linxu live CD. It cant hurt if you are familiar with Linux.
Does your BIOS see the drive?

Have you tried disconnecting it. Restarting computer. Reconnecting it?
Happens to us sometimes. Sometimes they stop talking back and its a pain in the dick.

Yes, you are missing that an external drive is not the same as an internal drive. If you can't reach it and have to open the machine up then it's an internal drive. External plugs in via a USB cable.

Chances are you will have to bring the machine in, have someone open it, remove the hard drive, and see if it can be recovered. Or you can try opening the machine yourself, unscrewing the drive and sending it to a data recovery company. Here in New York it would cost around $80 to see if it could be recovered or if it has to be sent to a lab. In that case, it would cost....who knows. LOL

...what you can try is putting the drive in a ziplock freezer bag and putting it in the freezer for a few hours. Take it out and try to boot it up. The 'clicling' sound is the drive wheel sticking and keeping it cold can un-stick it long enough to recover some data. It's worth a shot.

I keep an external USB drive caddy that you can just pop drives in and out of for instances like this. See if you can take the drive out of the external case and connect it internally. Drive itself is probably fine.

Same here, all my old laptop drives regain a new value this way.

It's a WD. No click of death... no scratches... one part of the whole thing is broken but not where the data itself is stored. I was assured that probably 100% of the data can be recovered.... 950 euro is a bit shit tho... i can eat icescreams whole summer for that

Have you stored it somewhere damp or in an excessively hot place? If you've only began having this problem, maybe moving your other hard drives so the same doesn't happen to them.
