    Hosting Einsteins around here?

My hosting contract ends in 2 months and i'm looking around but i'm a complete tech moron so i absoluteley don't know what i'm looking for.

I currently have managed hosting. This is more expensive then non-managed hosting. Question is: Do i need managed hosting? My current host says my server is being looked after but is this something that needs to be done daily? I mean... if i switch over to non-managed... do i have to put a programmer at it a couple of times a month or daily to fix all kinds of errors and issues? I have no idea how many times my current host reacts to an issue so i don't know if i need managed hosting at all...

These are the server specs i think...
    1cpu
    4GB memory
    150GB sorage
    2000 GB datatraffic???

What should a server like this cost monthly? Managed or non-managed...

    Thanks...

if you dont know anything about managing a server managed hosting is good to have but if you need to save $$$ go with un managed hosting.

I remember you, you said you pay ridiculous price for host just because your web host need to be located there. Server like that should cost 20$ monthly, non-managed.
For management, add from 50$ to 150$ dollars, depend on who provides management.

And also to answer do you need management - no, you can have control panel like whm/directadmin/webmin, as they do everything what average user need- adding domains to dns, creating mysql databases, creating ftp users,etc... And if you learn few linux commands, you dont even need control panel. But better to start with control panel when you dont know anything, after all i was using whm/webmin till i learned everything what i needed to know.

But does a server need to be managed daily? My thinking is: if things run they run....
But of course i could be very wrong about this...

If non-managed means that i need to hire a guy a couple of times a month to do work on the server then i quess it's better for me to stick with managed....

If you don't know how to manage a server you definitely need to go fully managed

When i fill in the specs at for example leaseweb, the similar server only not managed, costs me around 150 euros... not $20...
I pay 400 euros a month... Managed, and it includes an sla (couple of hours free support in case i need them to do something).

I have zero complaints about the performance of my current host and have zero downtime etc... but... i have this feeling it can be done cheaper

Nobody can answer these questions without knowing more about your business and your future plans. It all depends on what you need to do today and what you need to do tomorrow. Some people need help everyday, others very rarely need help.

If this is for your pay sites, I would not recommend unmanaged. If something goes wrong at 3 AM, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to pull in your freelance tech and get them to fix things. I would guess that your paysite business is your core moneymaker, you can't afford to have that down for three days because you can't get a hold of your freelance tech. That is not worth the savings.

The best thing you can do is talk to a few different companies, see what they can offer for you, and then make a decision based on what works best for your specific needs. Web hosting is a huge decision and should not be taken lightly.

I would be happy to chat with you about your options. ICQ: 147479144

Do you ever require your hosting provider to fix issues, update patches, install software, etc? If so you need management on your server if you are unable to complete these tasks. That being said $400 euro a month for a basic managed dedicated server definitely at the higher end of the spectrum especially with the requirements you provided above. Id be more than happy to quote you on some services. Shoot me an email and I'll see what type of pricing we can offer you - [email protected]

For starters I would avoid hosting companies that make you sign a contract this time around. I've seen many people get stuck with bad service.

                              Try this one: https://www.ovh.nl/dedicated_servers/
Hire someone to install directadmin, and after that you wont need assistance unless you fuckup something(and that is why most of people still using management despise fact how they dont need it)

Managed hosting is more expensive but if you can't manage your server yourself it's IMO better go fully managed than hire someone to manage it. Something can go wrong anytime and if you are on a managed server, there is support to help 24/7/365.

What should a server like this cost monthly? Managed or non-managed...
There are VPS (fully managed) with these specs for about $70/month.

i would suggest soyoustart which is part of ovh. I can setup a server and transfer data to new host. I have done both, i just gave up a unmanaged for one project and now am on managed. I picked managed this time since i have a full time job and can not really deal with a site down in the middle of work. When i first setup the site i used the hosting company maybe 5 times for a total of 1 hour. They do monitor, patch, optimize the server and database on a regular basis.
