"UnitedHealth Group Inc., the biggest U.S. health insurer, said in November that it might stop participating in the Obamacare next year after taking losses. One analyst predicted that Humana would follow suit."

What I love about Obamacare in the news is the touting of how many people have joined and record numbers of new sign ups etc.

They never mention that if you dont have a way to opt out your going to get fined for not signing up.

Fucking of course people sign up

Let them drop out.. There is no need to have insurance companies involved in health care.. We need to move on to a single payer system.. Insurance companies are just in the way.

I say fuck them, call their bluff..

I got all of my preventive tests done via Obamacare in 2015, and now I am good to go for another 20 years. And my Bladder Stone removed.

Exactly, fuck them. They are the reason why healthcare is so expensive. I hope everyone of them goes bankrupt.

The problem is they have become a leech industry that is too big to fail and have interwoven themselves into the political spectrum.

No one wants to be the guy that killed tens of thousands of jobs and bankrupted an entire industry. It needs to happen, but how the hell do you do it..

single payer isn't happening any time soon... there are a dozen different reasons, but one that stands out is that it wouldn't magically fund itself...

we pay 3% medicare tax now, which covers lets say 1/6th of the population... so to cover everyone we would need to pay 18%...

good luck getting anyone behind that...

It would need to be a long term switch over.. You have to ease the insurance companies off the tit so their collapse wouldn't destroy the economy. Then you would have to get the funds to pay for it...

The deal is, after it was all said and done, it would cost less in the long run even when everyone was insured.

yea, you would get the funds to pay for it by taxing people, and I think the magic number is in the ballpark of 18%... given that fact, do you honestly think it's a good idea? I don't know about you, but I would rather keep 18% more of my income and handle my own health care....

you are making an assumption that it would lower health care costs... but what makes you believe that? did the changes Obama put in place so far lower health care costs AT ALL? (I don't mean of course that some people get lower cost insurance because it's getting subsidized, but I mean actual lower cost)

Obama care worked great for me. Made my carrier drop the policy I was on and offer me a shittier one at double the price.

You are forgetting that under Obamacare there are no price regulations for health care. If you go single payer, you also regulate the costs of health care and medication.

It's not magic voodoo other countries do and every single one has health care costs at a fraction of ours. Our country is also the only modern western country that doesn't regulate the cost of prescription drugs.

Even fucking Mexico regulates the price of prescription drugs.

"fraction" is a bit of a stretch, most countries are indeed lower, but there are many reasons for it... it's impossible to make comparisons between countries, conveniently ignore numerous factors contributing to high health care cost in the US and then jump to conclusion that the root of the problem is that our "system" is broken and that socializing medical industry is the only answer...

one major reason that our medical care is relatively expensive on per capita basis is this:

that suggests that there are relatively few doctors... there is low supply and high demand = high prices... obvious solution: get more doctors
so lets perhaps setup more medical schools? "import" medical doctors from other countries by making it very easy to acquire US citizenship? etc

                                another major problem is this:

this one is a bit trickier... but I'm sure with some brainstorming one could come up with some moderately successful strategies to combat this issue...

but of course there is never any talk about getting to the root of the problem, the problem is always "1%ers", "capitalists", "big pharma", "evil corporations", etc... and the only solution on the table always involves government intervention resulting in bigger government, less freedom and higher taxes...
