I've used a few, including being a mod here on GFY using VBulletin. I do remember how long it took Texas Dreams to do an update.
So what are the best choices now? Things change much?
Carbon is not the problem, it makes up 0.041% of our atmosphere , 95% of that is from Volcanos and decomposing plants and stuff. So people in the US are responsible for 13% of the carbon in the atmosphere which 95% is not from Humans, like cars and trucks and stuff and they want to spend trillions to fix it while Solar Panel plants are powered by coal plants
think about that
I've tried several different forum software packages and I alway come back to vB. There are several reasons for this but the primary one is member complaints. Most people are familiar with vB and anything else throws them a curveball.
Not to mention the support and tons of mods available for it.
Texas Dreams...there's a name I haven't heard in years.
I've always used VB. There are a lot of tools in place to streamline the software. The secret is to have as much of it in place as possible before your forum grows. Once your database is populated, it starts to get a little hairy.
Every forum software mentioned in here seems like it'd be ok.
Problem is just protecting against spam.
Everything goes to hell if you let it.
I ran an IPBoards forum for a while, decent software back in 2010 (things keep getting features and improved at an ever accelerated rate).
Nice thing about IPBoards is that have a service like akismet where it api checks signups and almost completely wipes out spam. Check it out.
As regards vb, vb5 hasn't been well received at all. Vb4 is not being developed anymore and the mod scene is falling off. Vb 3 as used here is still good but lacks a lot of features and is also no longer being developed. A lot of big boards are, or have, already migrated to Xenforo. Xenforo is the way to go, but DYOR.

That's the thing right there. vb5 is awful but instead of realizing that people just don't like it, the vb team continue to go off in the wrong direction.
Part of the old vb team left and went on to create xenforo. It's everything vb should be.

I was thinking about him as I was writing this post. The day I showed up for work, we talked and when he found out I was already a mod at Xbiz.com, he put me in as a mod of GFY.
Still remember his birthday when he proclaimed, "Nobody is getting me those fucking balloons or flowers!" My reply was to give him a bottle of Jack Daniels holding down some balloons. He loved it.
After Shock Media came up as well. I went to his wedding. I really miss him too!

Spot on. I like vb myself, but I've recently migrated to xenforo and I'm not going back.
smf isn't bad, some of the antispam mods work well too
