    Commodore Computer Club

Who remembers a time when you had to program your own computer before you could do anything practical with it?

    These chicks are hot!

I had to type something, put a cassette in, press Play, then either watch a blank screen for 30 minutes or go away for 30 minutes until a game would appear

I still have 2 x TRS-80 Model 1's, and 1 TRS-80 Model 4, with 2 cassette drives, an Expansion Interface, a couple of floppy drives and a 300 baud modem. Nothing works well anymore sadly, but I'll never give this up.

And yes you're right - the computers of this era did nothing at all unless you typed in the programs, which was freaking awesome. I loved it.

Best game ever: "Trek 79", or any of its variations. You "flew" the Starship Enterprise to coordinates like 7,5, sector 5,5, hoping to not hit a sun on the way. All the "graphics" were ascii characters like E for Enterprise, K for Klingon, etc, and that was it. Fucking LOVED it.

I imagine the + was pretty similar. The +2 was just out when I put in my request for a Speccy, my nextdoor neighbour had a C64 which I thought was far superior, but I loved the Speccy too. Eventually after a number of years went down the Amiga route, said to my father "If Liverpool beat Swansea 8-0 tonight will you buy me an Amiga?", he said "Of course son!" and laughed...

He reluctantly went through with his promise

I still have my Commodore 64, Amiga 500 and 2000.

We used to be crak game testers when we were kids. We even built a Digitizer, in 1987 with a Video Camera, color wheel and the Amiga 2000.

We were taking Digital pictures in 1987!!! Crazy to think we do that with our cell phones now!

The screen was rarely blank and most of the games had a loading screen, like this one below

Also an average loading time was 5 minutes, so you could put 12-14 pirated games on a C-60 cassette tape

I miss the good old days of 8 bit computers... When I got started it was with a TRS-80 Model 1. It came with no software at all. I had to learn how to program in BASIC, and type programs in from books. Once it took me 2 x 10 hour days to type in a program for a game (Trek 79 or some variant). It was awesome.

There are quite busy retro computer groups on FB, they're collecting hw/se, attaching ZXs and CBMs to large LCDs and even code new games. There are brand new Spectrums to purchase too.
