I'm very good at math in my head. Was never taught that way, but that's how I have always done it.

Or in that particular scenario, I would take one off of the bottom number and add it to the top number so that it is 30 (easier to work with) and then add the new number from the bottom.

Yes. Takes the entire thought process out of it. Its been many moons since I was in the position of getting my homework graded but EVERY math teacher I ever had raged out at me not "showing my work". Is the answer correct? Then stfu. Unlike the plebs I went to school with I was capable of doing math in my head. Writing out every digit, step, x & o, fucks up people like me, increasing the odds of a silly mistake.

Common core is there so that the dumb shits that can't cut it don't get left behind. Sorry folks CC in schools makes everyone dumb. Dumbs down the smart kids that don't need this crutch, dumbs down the average kids because they're smart enough to see the ridiculousness of this method and dumbs down the not-so-smart kids because they're not challenged or taught to think.

          Great success!

I was the same way in high school. Repeatedly got scolded for not showing my work. They accused me all the time of cheating and getting answers from elsewhere when i simply did most math in my head.

me too. It does look convoluted on paper, but I when I have a math problem to solve in my head I intuitively break it down into pieces and work from there.

This might be too much for Grapesoda's brain.

But I'm not saying common core is a good thing. School curriculum should be designed at the state and local level, not by a bunch of federal workers.

I am guessing you do not have a child in the United States school system.

Common core isn't working at any level. The teachers complain they do not understand it, the kids aren't learning it, and the recent results of the first few years show this is a huge problem.

I have never understood why we don't copy the system with the best results. OVer time we would diverge and loose the path. Rinse and repeat. The way we try and educate our kids is just odd.

Yes, this way is much easier to do in the head, especially with long division.

I was reading long rants about this from tons of parents in the comments section of the local paper. Seems absolutely idiotic.

The school system is a joke in general. It's people in government who want to keep their jobs so they are continually doing bullshit busy work. They obviously don't care about how it effects the children.

I'm all for shortcuts if they work. For example, long division:

Instead of old way you can solve problems in your head sometimes.

                              For example: 5847295/29

You can round up to 30 and then solve 584729.5/3 keeping in mind you have a multiplier of 1.

                              So the answer is:
First number 1 (goes up to 2 because below is 10)
                              Carry over is 2 then 8... 28.
                              Second number is 28 + 1(number in first)*1(the multiplier) = 29/3
Second number is 9 (goes up to 10 because below is 11, shows as 0)
                              Carry over is 24
                              24 + 9*1 = 33/3 = 11 (will show as 1)
                              (7+11)/3 = 6
                              Carry over 2 + 6 = 8. 8/3 = 2 r 2
Next number is 2. (goes up to 3 because 10 is below)
                              Last number (29+2)/3 = 10 r 1 (shows as 0)

                              remainder is (15 + 10)/29
                              So answer is 201630 r 25/29

you obviously do not know what common core is. common core is a testing standard, not a problem solving methodology. the graphic in the op has nothing to do with common core.

I graduated from high school with AP Calculus and I use this method of "counting" which isn't really "counting", its more of number grouping. Although I was not taught in school to "count" this way, I've been doing this for as long as I can remember. It is faster processing than "carry the x" which when you have multiple levels of adding can get lost.

The picture shows 1 step on the left, when it should show all the steps you're actually taking like the pic on the right does. Then it might be compared properly.

My kids are in 3rd and 5th grade and are doing common core math, they learn the traditional methods as well, of course. The technique pictured above is just a shortcut they also learn to add proficiency and fluency to their math skills.

I figured this stuff out on my own in grade school and did a lot of math that way in my head, it bothered me to have to do it the long way when I already knew the answer but the teacher wouldn't accept anything else back in my day.

I'm not saying I am onboard with the whole common core thing, or that I even really understand it - just that the example above is being used out of context to what happens in the actual classroom.
                                          - As soon as I think up a good sig it's going here.

What the fuck you talking about?

A way to solve long division in 1/10th the time.

It only works "well" if you can round denominator up to easy number to solve without making the "factor" too high.

Here is another shortcut.... ANY number / 9

                                              1234/9

                                              = 1, (1+2), (1+2+3) R (1+2+3+4)
                                              .... or 137 R 1

                                              Shortcut for 5

1234/5 double each of the top numbers (except last digit which is remainder)

                                              = 246 R 4

it should be used as a helping hand. not the end all and be all of math.
It should be taught for a week or so as a way to do things in your head.
