PHP Question

I have a PHP question.

I paid a guy to do a web site in PHP and he got it 1/2 done and disappeared on me. The site was OK, but I couldn't edit anything. On each page there were small pictures with descriptive text next to the picture. The text was 10 point black Arial. There was no way to change color, size or font. Also you couldn't have paragraph breaks. Reminds me of an old database memo field.

I know have a guy writing the site in WordPress an assures me I can have all I desire in the text.

At some later date when the site is generating revenue I want to go back to PHP. However the new guy knows nothing of PHP. Can PHP do it all? Was the guy I hired not that good at PHP or am I stuck with boring descriptions?

Wordpress is PHP

You can add a CSS to it, and change the PHP output to use the CSS -- that way, you can have any look you want.

If the CSS and PHP were done correctly, you would have been able to edit it without an issue. My guess is that you hired based on price, and got a lackluster coder who abandoned you. Happens all the time, sadly. Sounds like the new guy is fucking it up as well.

If the new guy doesn't know php the I don't know what the heck is he doing cause wordpress is php... He is probably just installing a template and plugins that will somehat let you do what you want (something you can do on your own if you know a thing or two about running websites)

It seems to me that you don't know enough about websites to hire a coder directly, you need to know some basic stuff about it in order to give proper instructions, be able to choose a coder wisely and know if they do the job as they are supposed to or not

I don't like wordpress, but that's just me. Any coder will tell you the best approach in order to change fonts and colors is CSS, anyone telling you differently is clearly not the right person for the job.

Way back when

Sally (****** ****) talked Ted into doing a web site for his farm that had a Disc Golf course.
Marion charged him $200 for a year's domain & web site.
That was last summer. but the site is down. Marion was paying by the month, pocketed the cash instead of buying a year's domain & site.
And never paid me for doing the web site.

So far the site has taken 2 years to develop. Programming is one problem.
The other is just developing the directory, lots of information. However,
I don't work on it full-time as I have other things that need attention.
This last glitch has been going on since before 2012.

My programmer has been paid to date and hasn't charged me lately for the final fix.
A reason I hate to drop him. And as I said he's reasonable and lives in the same city, so that's a big plus.
I also think one of the reasons he hasn't charged is he likes the niche and believes it will be a long-term money maker for both.

I just hate to start over as my budget is draining away quickly.
I understand he's working several jobs, looking for a better one and has some ill family members, but I need to get this site up and making money now.

Once that's up any running, the goal is to create blogs to generate traffic.

I have a main stream domain the guys keep promising to do but seem to stall out on me.

Guy 1 set up the site using php but disappeared on me and I can't change anything on the site. Charged me a lot.

GF's brother offered to do it for free, then wanted a percentage then said he didn't want to do it.

Guy 3 offered to do it for $150 in Word Press as he just retired and it would be a learning experience as he had been doing city government sites and private business would be different.

I realize the site has some complicated issues. It's a business directory broken down by areas of a state and then other vendors would be listed by that area.

I'm just tired of hearing, "I'm just so busy at the moment I had to put your project on the back burner. Time to find someone who can deliver now at a reasonable price.

Then in 2012, you come on taklking about a site that has been in development for 2 years (so 2010) that you were having issues with regarding programmers, etc.

2013, you are talking about the same site, same issues.

2014, again, the same thing.

You haven't learned what PHP or CSS is in those 4 years? But you have the absolute gall to say something like this about someone else?

Biggest is my programmer can't solve one problem to make to make the web site work.

I've had an offer for a free web site, but the guy is so Old School he has no clue what SQL is. Still writes in MS Access.

Oh, btw, MS Access uses SQL throughout. The most typical way to access an Access database from a site or application would probably be by utilizing SQL pass through. Just thought I would throw that in there.

So true.. there's always two sides to a story..

Some people just don't have the budget for a good developer (that's how coders/programmers are called these days) and end up working with terrible 'coders'.

Other times the clients aren't able to make proper requirements, or keep changing them.. Generating irritation with the developer, causing him to run away

My tips for making your project a succesful one;

- Have a proper budget. 50 USD/hour is way too cheap for a good developer
- Create a functional design, mockup or wireframe.. plenty of tools out there, you don't need to be a tech to do that
- Select your developer not only on technical skills, but also make sure he understands your business and is able to communicate about what he will do for you in a way you understand
- Let him create a technical design from your mockup. Compare the two, discus about it, ask him for suggestions or improvements.. get him involved
- When agreement has been reached approve the designs and don't make any changes

Those are all probably good point however in this case they are really not applicable.

At one point I was going to help the OP. Had several conversations with him back during the whole Sally Rand fiasco. I ended up rescinding the offer. It was very apparent from the start that any project with him was going to be a death march and I don't do death marches.
