        I'm testing the technical preview right now. Upgraded from 7 and all my programs are intact and nothing has screwed up. Multiple desktops and new start menu are the only things I'm noticing. Oh and the built in Bing search on start menu.

          Have you noticed any response speed changes such as windows opening and closing or the speed at which programs open and ran? Faster...slower...no change?

          How about drivers? Did you have any device drivers that were changed? Were there device drivers for all your devices such as printers, scanners, etc?

          Lastly...are you able to install the final version over this beta version without the need for a clean install? It's fun to "play around" with beta versions but not if you have to wipe the drive to install the final release...any idea on that?

            This preview expires April 2015 I think it is, yes a clean install needed for final version.

              Microsoft and their confusing numbers.

              I'm still wondering what happened to Xbox 259 - 2.

                I have noticed a lag once in a while, like a delay in opening explorer that I never used to have. I am on i7 3.5ghz with 32gb ram.

                Everything seems to work with my Windows 7 drivers, in fact, I didn't need to install any.

                I'm not sure about the wipe out. I would rather just pay for an update and be done with it.

                  This is why:

                  Microsoft dev here, the internal rumours are that early testing revealed just how many third party products that had code of the form

                  if(version.StartsWith("Windows 9"))
                  { /* 95 and 98 */
                  } else {

                  and that this was the pragmatic solution to avoid that.

                      How about that dumb ass fucking charms bar? Has that god awful thing stopped popping up every time you move the mouse or scratch your balls?

                      I'm assuming that they stopped hiding the turn-off command too, right?

                        I just had a popup in the right corner asking me if I found everything in the start menu ok. I clicked the bubble and it launched Windows Technical Edition interactive form. Basically allowing us to talk to them about what we like as we use certain features. Pretty cool. I think the feedback tool is the best thing they've implemented yet.

                            Charms bar can be disabled, and you can chose between start menu and start screen.

                              Some new shortcuts.

                              Switch to recent window: ALT + TAB (unchanged) ? Hold shows new Task view window view, let go and switches to app.

                              ◾Snapping window: WIN + LEFT or RIGHT (can be used with UP or DOWN to get into quadrants)

                              ◾Task view: WIN + TAB ? New Task view opens up and stays open.

                              ◾Create new virtual desktop: WIN + CTRL + D

                              ◾Close current virtual desktop: WIN + CTRL + F4

                              ◾Switch virtual desktop: WIN + CTRL + LEFT or RIGHT
